Why Seasonal Renters Choose Delray Beach

Delray Beach is South Florida’s “Village by the Sea” — a compact, walkable city built around one of the liveliest main streets in the state. For seasonal renters it offers a rare combination: a true downtown you can live in without a car, an award-winning beach two blocks away, and a cultural scene that punches well above the city’s size.

It is also superbly located, roughly 30 minutes from Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) and a short drive from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL). Delray sits between polished Boca Raton to the south and the barrier-island calm of Highland Beach next door — so a quiet beach day and a buzzing night out are both minutes apart.

For seasonal renters, that balance translates into options. You can base yourself in a downtown condo steps from Atlantic Avenue, settle into a beachside building with the Atlantic at your doorstep, or choose a quieter golf or country-club community to the west — all within the same easygoing city.

Exploring Delray Beach

Atlantic Avenue

Atlantic Avenue is the spine of Delray and the reason so many seasonal renters fall for the city. Running from the Intracoastal Waterway to the ocean, the palm-lined avenue strings together dozens of restaurants, rooftop bars, art galleries, and independent boutiques. It is genuinely walkable, comes alive in the evenings, and hosts year-round events — from Art & Jazz on the Avenue to the famous 100-foot holiday tree at Old School Square through the winter season.

The Beach

The Delray Municipal Beach is a classic, wide stretch of guarded, Blue-Wave certified sand running along scenic A1A — just a couple of blocks from Atlantic Avenue. Atlantic Dunes Park to the south adds a natural dune preserve and nature trail, while Anchor Park and Sandoway House offer easy parking, picnic areas, and a small nature center. Wide sidewalks make morning beach walks effortless.

Dining & Nightlife

Few South Florida towns concentrate dining the way Delray does. Atlantic Avenue alone holds dozens of restaurants — waterfront seafood, chef-driven small plates, sidewalk cafes, and rooftop lounges. Local landmarks like Death or Glory, The Office, and the oceanfront dining at The Seagate anchor a nightlife scene that stays lively from happy hour into the late evening through the season. Reservations are wise on weekends in winter.

Arts & Pineapple Grove

Just off the Avenue, the Pineapple Grove Arts District is a walkable enclave of murals, studios, and galleries. The Arts Garage programs live music and theater year-round, while the Cornell Art Museum at the historic Old School Square cultural campus rotates exhibitions and outdoor concerts. The result is an arts calendar that rivals cities many times Delray’s size.

Gardens & Culture

A short drive west, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is one of the region’s cultural gems — sixteen acres of strolling gardens, a bonsai collection, tea ceremonies, and seasonal festivals. Back downtown, Old School Square serves as Delray’s cultural heart, with the Cornell Museum, the Crest Theatre, and a large outdoor pavilion that hosts concerts and events through the cooler months.

Nature & Outdoors

Nature is closer than you would expect. The Wakodahatchee Wetlands and neighboring Green Cay Wetlands offer raised boardwalks through bird-rich marshes that are a favorite of photographers and morning walkers. On the water, the Intracoastal is ideal for paddleboarding and day-cruising, and several marinas make boat charters and sunset cruises easy to arrange.

Neighborhoods & Where to Stay

Renters typically weigh three styles of Delray living: downtown & Atlantic Avenue condos within walking distance of dining and the arts; beachside buildings along A1A for direct ocean access; and quieter golf and country-club communities west of the Intracoastal for space and resort amenities. We match you to the right building for how you actually want to spend your season.

Getting Around

Downtown Delray is genuinely walkable, and the free Downtowner shuttle covers the core, so many renters leave the car parked for nights out on the Avenue. For day trips, I-95 and the Tri-Rail and Brightline lines connect you to West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Orlando. Both PBI and FLL airports are roughly half an hour away, giving you flexibility on flights.
